Your Numeral implementation runs through five stages: onboarding, your nexus study, registrations, go-live preparation, and autopilot. Most clients move through all five within about 30 days of kickoff — some take longer depending on what's still open, and you can see exactly where you stand from the Home tab in your dashboard. This article maps the whole path and links out to the detail for each stage.
At every stage, we handle the tax mechanics — reviewing exposure, filing registrations, submitting returns. You'll mainly need to provide documents, portal access, and approvals, which each stage below calls out.
Stage 1: Onboarding
We kick off with an intro call to your implementation team, walk through your timeline, and get your account set up — business documents, your bank account for remittance, and your virtual mailbox for tax mail. Setting Up Your Numeral Dashboard covers this step by step, and Setting Up Your Bank Account for Tax Remittance covers the ACH setup specifically.
Stage 2: Your nexus study
Next, we run your nexus study — reviewing your sales data against physical and economic nexus triggers in every state so you know exactly where you owe tax before you're registered anywhere. Review Your Nexus Study and Compliance Obligations covers how to read your results and what to do next.
Stage 3: Registrations and transfers
Once we know where you're exposed, we register you in new states or transfer in registrations you already hold elsewhere. Transferring Existing Registrations and Managing Tax Portal Credentials covers what that handoff looks like if you're bringing registrations with you.
Stage 4: Getting ready to go live
Once your registrations and account setup are in place, we finalize your account for ongoing compliance and prepare for your first filings. Your first filings may happen during this stage if they're already due, but they can also come after onboarding is complete. Before going live, you'll have a chance to review any remaining setup items and make sure everything is ready for autopilot.
Stage 5: Autopilot
Autopilot means turning on Autofile and Autoregister — our team submits filings and starts registrations automatically, without waiting for your review each time.
🟢 We recommend running through the Essential Go-Live Checklist before enabling either setting.
🟡 Turning on Autoregister doesn't retroactively start registrations for states where you've already crossed nexus—you'll need to request those manually first. Only states you trigger nexus in afterward start automatically.
