Transferring Existing Registrations and Managing Tax Portal Credentials

What Numeral needs to transfer your existing state registrations, why we're set as your default 2FA contact, and what to do if any of that changes.

If you're switching to Numeral with active state registrations already in place, this article covers how those registrations transfer over, why Numeral typically manages your portal credentials and 2FA, and what to do if any of that changes.

Registration vs. transfer — what's the difference?

If you're already registered and filing sales tax anywhere when you switch to Numeral, we take over that registration — we don't close it and start over. This article covers how that works, why we're set as your default 2FA contact, and what to do if your portal password changes.

Registration vs. transfer

If you're already registered or filing in a state, switching providers doesn't change that obligation — we take over the existing registration. That's a transfer. If you don't have an active registration there yet, we set you up.

How a transfer works

  1. You give us your login, 2FA access, and anything else you have on the account.

  2. We add our access and audit the account to make sure everything lines up.

  3. We take over filings from there. We can also handle backfilings or close the account if you need that instead.

Most states just need your login and 2FA access to get started. A few work differently and take longer — we'll tell you exactly what yours needs once we start the transfer.

Why we're your default 2FA contact

We're set as the default so we can log in to file, review, and audit your account without needing someone on your team available every time. Most states only allow one 2FA destination, so if your team held that slot instead, every login we need would ping you first.

🟢 Want visibility into the codes anyway? Ask us to set up forwarding so your team gets them too, without giving up the primary slot.

If your portal password changes

🔴 Update it in your Numeral dashboard too right away. We don't sync these automatically yet, so an old password on our end can hold up a filing. If we change a password instead, your dashboard updates on its own.

Coordinating a transfer without losing your own access

We can hand off ownership through the dashboard's 2FA bot or a quick call with your rep — your own access stays intact either way. A transfer is also a good time to sort out who on your team actually needs access going forward, especially if logins have been shared around.

Frequently asked questions

Can I keep my existing state registrations when I switch to Numeral?

Yes, and it happens automatically — if you're already registered and filing somewhere, we take over that registration rather than starting a new one. We'll need your login, 2FA access, and anything else you have on the account. We can handle backfilings and closures too, if needed.

Why is Numeral the default 2FA contact, and can that change?

Most states only allow one 2FA destination, so if your team held it instead, every login we need to make would ping you first. You can ask us to forward codes to your team too, without changing who holds the primary slot.
