Understanding your Numeral invoice

How to read your monthly Numeral invoice, set up or update payment, and resolve a line item that doesn't look right.

Written by Sadie Rudiger

đŸ”” Why your invoice might look different lately

Starting with the September 2026 billing cycle (invoices dated October 1, 2026 and after), your invoice is generated and collected through Orb instead of Stripe. Nothing about your contract, pricing, or payment details changed as part of this move — your saved payment method carries over automatically, and invoice emails now come from Orb rather than Stripe (the sender, invoice page, and PDF are all legitimate). Orb is used only for Numeral's own service fees — your sales tax remittance banking information is stored separately in your company profile and isn't affected by this change.

When your invoice is issued

Invoices are issued at the end of each month, after that month's filing deadlines have passed. This means your invoice reflects filings that have actually been completed, not ones still in progress.

Setting up or updating your payment method

If you have a saved payment method, you don't need to do anything. Your invoice is charged automatically when it's issued, and it will show as paid shortly after.

If you don't have a payment method on file, you'll receive the invoice by email with a due date and a link to pay instead.

To add or update a payment method:

  1. Log in to your Numeral account.

  2. Navigate to Settings → Account → Billing.

  3. Add a new payment method or select the option to update an existing one.

Viewing and downloading your invoices

Every invoice—old and new—is available under Settings → Account → Billing. Select an invoice to see:

  • Individual line-item charges

  • The state or period associated with each filing

  • The total invoice amount

You can also download any invoice as a PDF from the same page.

Reading your line items

Your Orb invoice groups charges by category, not by jurisdiction. If you filed in several states or countries that period, you'll see one section per billable category rather than one per jurisdiction.

đŸ”” Categories / invoice grouping (1): Only the categories (e.g., domestic filing, international compliance, international filing, etc.) you're billed for that period will appear. e.g., if you have no backfilings, amendments, or closures that month, you won't see sections for them.

đŸ”” Line items (2): Within each section, you'll see the jurisdiction code, quantity and rate (for example, 1 × $75.00), and line total. Each section has its own subtotal, labeled Total for the billing period shown. These subtotals roll up into the invoice's overall Subtotal and Amount due at the bottom.

đŸ”” Invoice details (3): Select Show usage details under any section for more detail on what's included in that charge.

If you're billed through Shopify

If your Numeral charges are billed through Shopify, nothing changes for you. Your charges continue to go through Shopify exactly as before.

We still generate an invoice on your account so your billing history is complete, but that invoice never charges you directly, and you won't get an email from it. Instead, we email you a link to pay through Shopify.

You can also find the charge directly under Settings → Account → Billing and pay it from there.

Frequently asked questions

Why was I charged a filing fee when I had $0 in sales?

The filing fee covers preparing and submitting your return, which we do regardless of whether tax was due. It isn't a percentage of the tax collected.

Did my payment method change when billing moved to Orb?

No. The payment method you had on file is still what we charge. You don't need to re-enter anything.

I got an invoice email from Orb instead of Stripe — is that legitimate?

Yes! As of the September 2026 billing cycle, Numeral invoices are generated and collected through Orb instead of Stripe. The email, invoice page, and PDF are all legitimate. See the example in this article for reference.
