Streamlined Sales Tax (SST) Filing with Numeral

What Streamlined Sales Tax (SST) is, which of your states file this way, and what's different about SST confirmations compared to a standard return.

Written by Carlos Madeira

Streamlined Sales Tax (SST) is a system used by a subset of U.S. states to simplify and modernize sales tax filing. This article explains what’s different about SST filings and which states use it, so you know what to expect when filing.

What's different about SST

SST’s stated goal is to make filing sales and use tax across the U.S. simpler and less time-consuming. There are 24 member states that have adopted the rules and technology systems necessary for SST’s automated calculations and filings.

🟔 The SST platform does not generate a traditional state return when filings are submitted through their system. Instead, Numeral provides an internal confirmation for your records once the filing is complete.

The review and approval process in your dashboard works the same way as any other filing — the difference is in what happens on the state’s side after you approve it.

If you need a copy of your SST confirmation for your records, you can download it by clicking into the filing from your dashboard. If you can’t find what you’re looking for or have additional questions, feel free to reach out to our team.

Which states file through SST

🟢 Numeral currently files through SST in: Arkansas, Iowa, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Minnesota, North Carolina, North Dakota, Nebraska, New Jersey, Nevada, Ohio, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, Wisconsin, West Virginia and Wyoming.

🟔 Tennessee and Pennsylvania are SST member states, but Numeral files standard (non-SST) returns for them rather than through SST.

If a state you file in isn’t listed above, we file it as a standard return. Most records can be obtained on the backend by logging in to the direct tax authority portal (i.e., not the SST dashboard) or by contacting the jurisdiction directly. However, not all states provide filing visibility once a return is submitted via SST. Just something to be aware of when your team is thinking about records and year-end reconciliation.
